Upper School Guidance/Counseling

Cumberland’s Upper School Counseling Program consists of working with and supporting students in the areas of academic development, personal/social growth, and career development. School counseling support is offered in individual student meetings and classroom guidance sessions geared towards appropriate grade level topics. By partnering with parents and working alongside teachers, our school counselor works to support student success in all areas.

As part of the Explore class, special attention is given to students in 8th grade to help them understand how they are fearfully and wonderfully made during this difficult stage of development. All eighth grade students will take personality, spiritual gifts. and learning styles assessments, as well as a career interest inventory.

Periodically, our school counselor will offer specific Parent Academies geared towards relevant support topics to help parents in their role as partners with Cumberland as their child's primary educator. Examples of these Parent Academies might include: How to Thrive and Flourish in High School, College Night, Financial Aid/Scholarship Planning, Interpreting PLAN/PSAT, and Internet Safety, etc.

Throughout the school year, our school counselor will communicate with parents via mass emails distributed through our online Renweb system regarding topics such as college and career planning, financial aid and scholarship opportunities, PSAT/PLAN/SAT/ACT testing and preparation, college trips and/or college fairs, and general academic and/or personal, social, and spiritual issues impacting students and parents. Individual parent and student meetings are scheduled as needed throughout the school year with our school counselor regarding student’s four-year high school plan, academic planning and intervention, and college and career planning. Individual testing results from middle school are utilized to help student success in the above areas.
